Reckless Abandon

I have mentioned before what a terrible planner I am. It seems as if each time I try to plan something, the weather wont cooperate, someone becomes sick so mostly I just fly by the seat of my pants. Someone told me about a wildlife area about an hours drive from here, told me the birds were fantastic so I've been trying to get out there. I didn't want to go there on the weekend or the holiday so yesterday I decided to take flight as it were. My hands needed a rest anyway so I made a peanut butter sandwich, grabbed some tangerines, filled my bottle with water, grabbed my hat, put and extra camera battery in my purse. Then I decided to use the bathroom and the phone rang, and don't forget the outgoing mail and make the dogs potty before they are locked in, Eric now waiting in the car wondering why women take so long no doubt.....
So we got there only I forgot one thing.

My camera enjoyed the luxury of the couch while we drove away.....This is Eric's cheep, cheep cell phone, I don't even have one that rings out or have any idea how to download those crummy pictures. But I must say, the waterfowl were wonderful, pintails, shovelers, teals, maybe, two kinds of egrets, oh those small snowy ones have my heart and the harriers Oh MY!!! so many, so beautiful along with a bevy of flycatchers and phoebes and numerous other birds I have no idea or documentation of.

Still we had fun and I always enjoy spending time with my bff doing simple things, simply marvelous!

Back to work today , enjoy your day all you lovey dovies,  xo Ro

  1. ya' know....sometimes things happen for a reason.
although it would have been nice to fully capture the images, you have the memories embedded in your brain chip.

    1. You are right..........and the way the wind kicked up and the clouds moved in, sometimes the simple way is best!

  4. Good for you, for not getting bogged down in the stress of "planning of it all" and just going somewhere amazing with your best friend. I'd like to take a lesson from you as I am really bad at doing spontaneous well. :-)

So, um, after that glorious description of all the wildlife activity, nature geeks like me want to know... what was the name of this awesome birdy spot so close to home??!!

(Oh, and your response to the generic invite made me smirk from ear to ear! Ha!)

    1. San Jacinto Harsi in Perris, not to be confused with Paris, it was an unexpected treat. Beautiful views of Mt San Jacinto, I learned about it from my stone guy! OH MAN THOSE MARSH HAWKS....Harriers, I want to take Bryce.

    2. San Jacinto!! Yes!!! Now I understand so much more... that place is good medicine for the soul. Not just because of all the birds, but the feeling of the place is really unique and there's so much SPACE to think and look around. In the Spring/Summer, the huge blackbird colonies in the wetlands (all 3 species breed there, I believe) are nearly deafening with their bizarre otherworldly noise. It is a very well loved spot for birders in the winter for finding raptors of all kinds: from several different species of owl, to falcons and hawks... and, yes, those harriers! Oh, and they have Ring-necked Pheasant roaming the fields -- quite likely the population was established there for the express purpose of hunting. Knowing your love for feathers, I thought I should mention that there might be the possibility of coming across something as long and lovely as this:

  7. I love that you two did this, just took the day and WENT after the hour's worth of last-minute chores were completed....

AND it's great that you went camera-free...really. Sometimes your body, mind and soul just need to absorb the place where you are...not record it, at least not with manmade technology. Even working as a reporter, I truly believe this--we wait for your photos and blogposts every day, of course, BUT you deserve to unplug, too, much as you love your camera.

And oh!! Those birds!!! You had two hands free to watch and listen....
    :-)

    GOOD FOR YOU!

  8. I have now learned to surrender to the fact that this is exactly how I (& mine) begin our travels...repeat after me: keys: car&house, wallet: yours&mine, camera: yours&mine, batteries: yours&mine, phone: yours&mine, charger(s), bag, glasses/sunglasses...over & over & over again!

We always forget something, we always bring something extra, & we always leave something behind, lol!
