Fun and Funny

It's always fun when work is gratifying, by that I mean work that pleases me. If it calls to you well then that's a bonus but I largely work to satisfy my own craving. I was happy to have my craving back which was achieved with a lot of walking and talking to friends. I love a brooch, I love to wear them gift them and make them, they're like little paintings, so clean without chains straps or bands, soon it will be glorious scarf season :) The stone is a really lovely specimen of Burro Creek Jasper from Arizona. This material has become scarce and expensive.

*Brooch can be found here

While walking along an alder strewn creek I found piles of skeletonized leaves picked clean by a tiny shiny black beetle that sheens green. (must look it up) The veins were in tact only so I stuffed some in my pouch and transferred them onto silver.

FunNy

click to enlarge; Cone head momma still in bed this a.m. They were a sleepy bunch, I had already walked an hour when I found them in their bedroom.

Have a fun/funny weekend, love, Ro

  1. I see the cone head:) Did you notice that when you took it or later when you looked? Too funny. Love that stone with the leaves, such a pretty color and matrix. Really enjoyed your take on the aspen leaves (I've got a thing for danish modern, so it figures I would love that shape and asthetic). Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

  3. Aaaah... this post has it all, Ro!

...something beautiful and exquisite (your brooch)

...something to make me laugh (hilarious deer pic)

...and something to get my insect-loving heart pumping (your mystery alder beetle)

Check out this post on BugGuide from a wonderful CA naturalist/photographer about the beetles she found creekside among the alders: (Be sure to click on the links she provides to other related images from the same day!)

  4. p.s. In case you didn't notice, this subfamily of beetles are appropriately known as "Skeletonizing Leaf Beetles"... love that you used the beautiful venation of the leaves on the back of your brooch, btw.

  6. I thought you up Harsi! I saw your water tank off in the distance this morning and thought I would write you plus, and I hate to even mention it that it might be scared away (shhhh rain? could it be?)

Yes that is the culprit for sure. I used to find them in my mountain garden, if you try and touch them they suddenly drop off, they are extremely destructive and sneaky but hey we all need to make a living.

  7. Cool! Glad I was able to help you put a name to your beetle beasties.

You know sometimes I see a tiny lone figure atop one of the distant hills and wonder if it might just be you looking over... *grin*

Yes... shhh... we must treat the possibility of rain like the shy and elusive creature that it is. But, yeah, I've got my fingers crossed that at bare minimum the clouds will creep into the canyon tonight and I will wake-up to overcast skies.

  10. Hey Debbie... when did you start that awesome rain dance of yours? We already had some brief sprinkles here in the canyon about a half hour ago! Oh, but the clouds were stunning at sunset too... Bring on the stormy weather!!

  12. Ro, this Burro Creek cab looks delighted in its frame--gorgeous design!! Your brooches are such works of art--could have their own little gallery to hang in, never mind the scarves--although it's a lot more fun to take one of your brooches out on the town!!

Those deer are TOOOOOO funny--good catch with the camera!!!

Debbie, your rain dance CRACKS ME UP!!! I hope it worked--sprinkles, showers, streams, downpours, whatever, so things aren't so crispy there. We're warm and sunny, and that's just fine right now, but I know you folks need some rain! Wishing some your way.....
